Formal Verse; The Road

Trees smother the sky

lamp-posts line the road

proclaiming the way

the lamps give no light

it falls through the leaves

a pallid green glow

that lightens the woods

A shadowy lake

is cast in the woods

The road is not long

but even the same

adventures begin

and end in this place

  1. Certainly pinned down a consistent five-syllable rhythm/meter in these lines. That’s a good poetic exercise. Whether you aimed for this or not, you’ve relied heavily on iambic meter (unstressed syllable followed by stressed syllable) in almost all of these lines. Sounds really cool – even the ones that disrupt this pattern. Sometimes that’s what you want as a writer, a break from the rhythm you’ve established. Great work.
